The eight classes

ClassRoleWhat it's likeWatch out for
GladiatorMelee, half tank half damageEasy and forgiving, can off-tank. The most beginner-friendly meleeLess damage than pure damage classes, less tanky than Templar. Wants low ping
TemplarMain tankThe easiest and most forgiving. Always in demand, the only real main tank. Party shields and damage sharingLoses most 1v1s, though it drags fights out. Raids depend on you
AssassinMelee burstHighest ceiling and burst. The easiest solo Abyss class. A clone that resets cooldowns and adds damage for a burst windowSquishy, must stay behind the boss, needs combat speed and cooldown gear Global doesn't have yet. Needs very good ping
RangerRanged damageThe consistent one: shoots while moving, best uptime, best farmer. The most played class on KRFeels soft in early arena
SorcererRanged burstVery high damage on bosses that stand still, strong crowd control in PvPImmobile, manual cooldown management, gets focused in the Abyss
SpiritmasterRanged, spiritsThe easiest ranged rotation. Spirits keep attacking while you move, so ping barely matters. Fears and dispels in PvPThe least played class on KR, so its bugs last longer. See Spiritmaster
ChanterSupport with real damageBuffs (combat speed, cooldown reduction) and burst heals, very hard to kill. Top raw damage on Global early onWeaker heals than Cleric. Its party aura doesn't stack with the Cleric's
ClericHealerThe best healer and a group revive. Always invited. Best class in group PvPThe lowest damage. Can't kill anyone in 1v1

What decides how a class does

  1. Fight shape. Geared players kill bosses in 15 to 35 seconds, which favors burst (Assassin). Long, moving raid fights favor ranged (Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Ranger).
  2. Gear level. At Global's current combat power nobody has much combat speed or cooldown reduction, so Chanter and Gladiator look better now and Assassin worse than on KR. See Class tier lists.
  3. Melee has the higher ceiling and lower floor, ranged the higher floor (Kanon). Melee can block, ranged has to dodge.
  4. Ping. Fast-hitting classes lose the most. See Settings and performance.

What KR players kept playing

Anders compared two KR community counts (all characters early in the year against characters active in September):

ClassKeptNow
Cleric62%, the best2nd most played, about 1 in 5 active characters
Chanterabout 55%3rd
Templarabout 41%under 1 in 10, so tanks are always wanted
Sorcererabout 39%5th
Rangerbig dropstill 1st
Gladiatorthe worst4th
Assassin7th
Spiritmasterlast

The classes every raid takes are the ones people kept playing.

Global differences

Global launched with 4 Stigma slots (TW has 6), a level 45 cap and lower stats, so some KR builds don't carry over. KR builds and tier lists are a starting point, not a rule, until Global players have their own data (Divium).

Party buffs and which ones stack: Party buffs. Class build pages: Ranger, Spiritmaster, Templar, and the creator builds for Assassin and Cleric.
